CALGARY AND HIGH RIVER OPTIMIST CLUBS TAKES
THE KILT SKATE CHALLENGE!
KILTED SKATERS TO CELEBRATE SIR JOHN A’s
BIRTHDAY
WITH BARE KNEES AND ICE
CALGARY (January 8, 2015) –
Hundreds of skaters in kilts and other Scottish attire will gather at the
Olympic Plaza to celebrate the uniqueness of Scottish Canadian heritage and to
celebrate the 200th birthday of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir
John A. Macdonald – a great Canadian and a great Scot.
The Optimist Clubs in Calgary and
High River have organized “Sir John A’s Great Canadian Kilt Skate” on January
31st. Other community groups and Scottish societies across Canada have also
coordinated kilt skates that will be held in Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and
Saskatoon. The Department of Canadian Heritage and the Scottish Government have
also provided support.
“We welcome everyone to join us,”
says Denise Dolph, an event organizer. “We hope to get skaters of all ages and
nationalities to participate at this free, public event.”
Place: Calgary Olympic Plaza.
Date: Saturday, January 31, 2015.
Time: 4:00-6:00 pm Join us for birthday cake,
hot chocolate, and Scottish entertainment. Sign Sir John A.’s birthday card.
Attire: Tartans and other Scottish wear welcome.
Kilts encouraged
but not required.
Kilted skaters
will be rewarded.
Sir John A. Macdonald was born in
Glasgow, Scotland, on January 11, 1815. He came to Canada with his family as a
small boy. “We’re looking forward to
Calgarians of all backgrounds and nationalities to join us on January 31ST,”
says Dolph. “This will be fun for the
whole family.”
